Children Print E-mail

Image of a baby girl smiling.Children often have a fear of the dentist. We were kids once, so we understand. Our dentists have special training in caring for children from infancy through young adult hood.

We recommend that your child have his or her first trip to the dentist about 6 months after the first tooth comes in. If he or she is 12 months old and hasn’t seen a dentist yet, please call us to schedule an appointment.

Pacifiers, thumb sucking and hereditary factors weigh heavily on your child’s oral development and it’s important to monitor your child’s progress. Even though their permanent teeth won’t come in for a few years, it’s important for the dentist to track your child’s oral development so we can anticipate any future problems. Annual visits are recommended until your child’s permanent teeth arrive, and after that, he or she should have a cleaning and exam every six months to check for cavities and other problems.

To help keep your child’s teeth strong and healthy, lead by example. Keep sugary snacks and drinks to a minimum. Encourage good daily habits like brushing twice a day and flossing once a day. Make it fun for them! Take advantage of the wide variety of children’s oral care products on the market today. Get a soft toothbrush with their favorite cartoon character and bubblegum flavored toothpaste. See how many funny faces you can make when brushing and flossing, and turn it into an educational event by pointing out different parts of the mouth. The habits they develop early on will stay with them through adulthood.
